Powerbull Bat Company Makes Custom Wood Bats for MLB Players

Just down the road from Southwest University Park, home of the Triple-A baseball El Paso Chihuahuas, you’ll find Powerbull Bat Company.  Powerbull partners Raul Salazar and Kurt Gross make customized wood baseball bats for players at every level, here, in the heart of Downtown.

Powerbull Bat Co. was founded in 2003 by Salazar out of his garage in Chihuahua, Mexico, and has since expanded to become one of only 37 licensed bat suppliers for Major League Baseball.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Salazar started playing Little League Baseball at 5-years old. Salazar played baseball at Coronado High School after moving to El Paso from Los Angeles, California, and later went on to play in amateur baseball leagues in Mexico from 1999-2000.

After the Mexico baseball league transitioned from aluminum to wood bats, Salazar decided to take a swing at fabricating his own baseball bats. He learned how to make wood bats through extensive trial and error. Eventually, he began selling them to professional baseball players in Mexico.

The business really took off when he sold six dozen bats to the Sultanes de Monterrey, a professional baseball team in the Mexican League. He also sold bats to the Liga Mexicana, Liga del Pacifico, and the 2013 World Baseball Classic tournament.

Powerbull Bat Company gained wider exposure when ex-MLB player Karim Garcia began using their bats in Mexico.

“Karim Garcia really put us on the map in Mexico,” Salazar said. “When people saw him with our bats, the orders really started kicking in.”

In 2019, Salazar moved the business to El Paso and teamed up with Kurt Gross. Whether they’re making bats for professional Major League Baseball or Little League players, every order receives the same care and attention to detail.

Every Powerbull bat starts is selected from the most durable wood, sourced from Upstate New York, then hand-split and cut into billets. Powerbull uses maple, birch, and ash billets to construct their bats and meet each player’s desired specifications.

“For a professional player, the model or distinct shape, the weight, and the balance are all crucial in order for them to perform at their highest potential,” said Gross and Salazar.

Powerbull bats are used by players of all levels all over the world, including major leaguers Andrew Knizner, Javier Baez, Franchy Cordero, Franmil Reyes. They were recently used by Team Israel in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic games.
