Proper Printshop is Providing Joy to El Pasoans with Hand-Printed Custom Designs and Branding

Are you a fan of graphic tees that will make strangers do a double-take or spark a conversation? You’ve come to the right place if you’re looking for unique border-centric designs created here in El Paso at Proper Printshop.

Proper’s “No Pos Meow” design which features a cat in a 10-gallon cowboy hat is just one of the many eye-catching shirts designed and printed at Proper. And they are the exact reason Alan Hodson, co-owner of Proper Printshop, started his very own printing business in 2011.

“I started printing because I liked putting silly things on my own shirts,” says Hodson. “I get a lot of joy out of making people laugh or smile when they see the design. To me, that’s worth more than money.”

Maribel is Proper Printshop’s longest-serving employee. She joined the company in 2016 and is now head of the production and Proper Printshop’s best screen-printer.

Since joining forces with fellow El Pasoan and co-owner, Jonathan “J.J.” Childress in 2016, Proper Printshop has mastered the art of screen printing and become a full-service print shop, producing high-quality, custom-printed items, from water bottles, key-chains, pins, and patches, to stickers, hats, apparel, and large banners up to 10×10 feet. Proper Printshop also offers custom printed and embroidered apparel for businesses to enhance their brand.

Unlike most print shops, Proper Printshop still practices the old, dying art form of hand-printing posters and fine art, producing one-of-a-kind, hand-signed, items that are “much more collectible than digital posters.”

Proper’s model is to do things “the old-fashioned way” –giving their products a unique aesthetic while making prints more collectible.

But, Proper is more than just a print shop. Throughout the years, Proper has used its retail and printing space to serve the community as a live music venue, artist space, and to host vegan cooking classes and Art en Vivo, a weekly live poster printing series that featured 52 local artists and allowed the public to participate in the printmaking process.

Since moving into a new 14,000 square foot location at 1120 E. Yandell Dr., Proper Printshop continues to grow and improve its business operations, implementing larger machinery and manufacturing products faster and more efficiently. The next thing on the horizon for Proper Printshop is developing its event space to once again host artists, bands, and community events when the time is right.

For now, the community is welcomed into thenew Proper Gift Shop to browse items like the “Mexican Ninja Warrior” t-shirt and other unique accessories. You can also find Proper Printshop items at shops around town, including Chuco Relic, Whole Foods, So El Paso, and at theproperprintshop.com.

Proper Printshop is happy to help support local nonprofits, as well. The business regularly gives back to the community through a monthly charitable shirt drive. When the El Paso community experienced the August 3, 2019, tragedy, Proper Printshop printed tens of thousands of “El Paso Strong” shirts to help raise $160,000 for the El Paso Victim’s Relief Fund, which helped support victims and survivors of those who were directly impacted.

“The best part about my business is that I get to wear a t-shirt every day.” -Alan Hodson, Co-Owner of Proper Printshop
